Here is exactly what each step means
No medical degree required. Here is what really happens, in everyday words, so you can walk in feeling confident instead of anxious.
Detox, in plain English
Detox just means letting the substance leave your body safely in a home-like setting while a medical team keeps you comfortable. Medication eases withdrawal so it is manageable, not scary. You are watched around the clock, but the atmosphere is calm, not clinical.
Residential, in plain English
Residential means you live here for a few weeks in a calm, homelike setting. Your days mix one-on-one therapy, group support, rest, and real meals. Think of it as protected time to heal, not a hospital ward.
Aftercare, in plain English
Aftercare is where you master the tools and behaviors that protect your recovery after structured treatment ends. We help you plan it and connect you to the right next step, so you never walk out the door without a map.
You are in good hands
Every step is staffed by licensed clinicians. There are no surprises, no judgment, and no pressure. If you have a question at any hour, someone is there to answer it.
Two kinds of care, working as one crew
Every safe flight needs a steady pilot and an airworthy plane. Recovery is the same. We care for both before you ever taxi toward the next destination.
The pilot is your mind
Psychiatric & clinical care
Therapy, psychiatry, and clinical support get the pilot rested, clear-headed, and ready to navigate. We treat what is underneath, build real skills, and steady the hand at the controls so you can fly with confidence.
The plane is your body
Medical & nursing care
Medical detox and 24/7 nursing get the plane airworthy again. We safely clear the substance, manage withdrawal, and tend to your physical health so the aircraft is sound from nose to tail.
Pilot and plane are refueled and fitted together, then cleared for the next destination: a strong, well-planned life in recovery.

Getting here is simpler than it looks
Most people fly into John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County. LAX and Long Beach (LGB) are solid alternatives if the fare or schedule works better.
- Ask admissions for travel guidance. We can share timing tips and ground transport options so you are not figuring it out alone.
- Morning arrival is best. It gives you a full first day to settle in, meet staff while they are on shift, and start feeling at home before the sun goes down.
- Not sure which airport to use? Call us and we will walk you through the closest option, timing, and what to expect at pickup.
What a day actually looks like
Every phase has its own rhythm. Here is an honest look at detox, residential, and how aftercare planning works.
Rest and recover
- Morning vitals check and a warm breakfast
- Comfort medication as needed, on a schedule
- Lots of rest, hydration, and quiet recovery time in a home-like space
- Short, gentle check-ins with nurses and doctors
- Light snacks, calm common areas, and sleep when you need it
Heal with structure
- Breakfast together, then a morning intention or group
- Individual therapy to work on what is underneath
- Group sessions and skills classes you can actually use
- Free time, fresh air, movement, and downtime to reset
- Evening reflection, community time, and real sleep
Plan the next leg
- We do NOT run aftercare on site - we plan and refer
- A counselor maps your needs and the behaviors you want to change
- We match you to the right next step clinically
- We facilitate the referral and help with placement
- You leave with a clear plan for mastering your tools in real life
Important: we do not provide aftercare on site. For aftercare we handle the planning and help facilitate the referral and placement somewhere that fits you clinically.
Your first day and your last day
The two days people worry about most. Here is exactly what to expect on each, so there are no surprises.
Your first day
- A friendly welcome, not a checklist interrogation
- A simple medical and wellness check so we know how to care for you
- We settle you into your room and show you around
- You meet a few staff and learn what tomorrow looks like
- You can rest - day one is about feeling safe, nothing more
Your last day
- You leave with a written plan for what comes next
- We review your progress and the tools you have built
- Your aftercare referral and placement are already arranged
- Family or support people are looped in if you want
- You go home knowing exactly where the runway leads
You do not have to be ready, you just have to start
Almost everyone feels nervous before they arrive. That is normal, and it is not a reason to wait. The moment you call, the unknown starts to shrink. We answer your questions, verify your insurance, and walk you through each leg of the trip before you ever pack a bag.
You will never be handed a stack of jargon and left to figure it out. Real people explain everything in plain language, check in often, and adjust your care to how you actually feel. The goal is simple: get you safely through, build tools that last, and hand you off to the right next step with a clear plan.
Please note: this page is general information and does not provide medical advice or guarantee outcomes. Talk with our admissions team about your specific situation.
Questions people ask before they come in
Will detox hurt?
Our goal is to keep you comfortable. Medical detox uses medication and 24/7 monitoring so withdrawal is managed and far gentler than going it alone. Tell us how you feel and we adjust your care.
What actually happens during detox?
You check in, meet the medical team, and get settled into a comfortable, home-like room. Over the next few days your body clears the substance while nurses monitor your vitals and doctors prescribe comfort medications. You rest, eat, hydrate, and check in with staff. There is no pain you have to tough out.
What should I bring?
Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, a list of any current medications you are taking, comfortable clothes for about one week, and travel-size toiletries (alcohol-free, TSA-compliant). If you are staying for school or work, bring the special items and rules you need for those too. If you are on leave, have a court case, or are mandated to treatment, bring any relevant paperwork, such as court orders, FMLA or HR forms, and contact information for your attorney, probation officer, or case manager. Music is allowed, but it must be offline: no internet access on your device. Leave valuables at home. Our admissions team sends a full packing checklist before you arrive.
Can I use my phone during my stay?
You can bring your phone and charger, but it must be in airplane mode throughout your stay so you can stay focused on your recovery. Do not worry, the flight crew has a phone on board to call your loved ones, so you can always stay in touch.
Can I bring my emotional support animal?
Yes, in many cases, if your ESA meets the same standards a landlord would expect. You must provide a current ESA letter from a licensed mental health professional. Your animal must be up to date on all required vaccines, spayed or neutered, fully potty trained, and well-mannered around people and other animals. We accept dogs and cats under 75 pounds; breed restrictions may apply. Your animal must be comfortable resting quietly in a crate when you are in sessions or asleep, and you are responsible for its daily care and cleanup. Call admissions ahead of time so we can confirm availability and any paperwork.
Do you offer 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery, or other options?
Yes. Recovery is not one-size-fits-all. We offer 12-step meetings (AA and NA) and also support alternatives like SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, and faith-based or secular paths. You are encouraged to find the approach that fits you, and you are never forced into a program that does not feel right.
Can you accommodate dietary or religious requirements?
Yes, and we want to know in advance so there are no surprises. Tell admissions about any dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, allergies, diabetic, gluten-free) and any religious or spiritual practices (prayer times, services, observances, holidays). We do our best to honor your meals, schedule, and practices throughout your stay.
How is my privacy protected under HIPAA?
Your privacy is protected by law. Under HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 (a federal rule written specifically for substance use treatment records), we cannot share your information, or even confirm that you are here, with your employer, school, or family without your written consent. You decide who knows. Use the words 'medical leave' with work or school, and route any paperwork through HR or a dean, never your direct manager or professor.
What does a first day in detox look like?
A warm welcome, a simple medical check, and getting settled into your room. You meet a few staff, learn the rhythm of the next few days, and rest. Day one is about feeling safe. Nothing more.
How long does detox take?
Most people spend several days in detox, but it varies by substance, health, and history. Your team watches your progress and moves you to residential only when you are medically stable and ready.
What is residential treatment really like?
You live in a calm, homelike setting with a structured daily schedule: therapy, groups, meals, downtime, and sleep. It is not a hospital ward. It is protected time to heal with licensed clinicians and peers who get it.
Can I leave residential for appointments or family events?
In most cases, yes, with clinical approval and proper planning. We build passes and outings into your schedule when appropriate so life does not have to stop entirely while you recover.
Do you provide aftercare on site?
No. We do not run aftercare ourselves. We handle the planning, the referral, and help facilitate placement somewhere that fits you clinically. The goal is to give you a clear plan for mastering the behaviors and tools that keep you steady after structured treatment.
What does aftercare planning involve?
A counselor maps your needs, recovery goals, and the behaviors you want to change. We match you to the right outpatient program, sober living, or continuing care option, then facilitate the referral and help with placement. You leave with a written plan and a path toward mastering your tools in real life.
How long does the whole program take?
Detox is typically several days, and residential treatment commonly runs a few weeks, though everyone is different. Your clinical team builds a timeline around your needs, not a fixed template.
What happens on my last day?
You review your progress, collect your written aftercare plan, and confirm your next appointment or placement is already arranged. Family or support people are looped in if you want. You walk out knowing exactly where the runway leads.
Can I use my insurance?
Likely yes. We are in network with Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, MHN, and TRICARE. Call us and we will verify your benefits confidentially before you commit to anything.
What does it mean that The Runway is accredited?
Accreditation means an independent organization has reviewed our facility against demanding national standards for safe, quality care. The Runway holds The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval and is licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS #300262AP). Accreditation is voluntary - we chose to be measured against a higher standard.
Why does accreditation matter when choosing a treatment center?
Accreditation is one of the clearest signals that a program takes safety, client rights, and quality seriously. Reviews look at areas like medication safety, infection prevention, and ongoing quality improvement. It is widely recognized by clinicians and insurers as a mark of a trustworthy, well-run program.
How can I ask admissions about the facility and its accreditations?
Just ask. Our confidential admissions team is happy to walk you through our licensing and Joint Commission accreditation, what the environment is like, who provides care, and how your stay would work. A good team answers these questions clearly and without pressure.
Still unsure? Ask us anything
