You carried more than your share

This is not your fault, and it is not weakness

You answered the call. You carried weight most people will never understand, and you kept carrying it long after you came home. What you are facing now is not a moral failure or a lack of discipline. It is what happens to a body and a brain that endured too much for too long. Substance use often starts as a way to quiet pain that never got to rest.

There is no shame here. Only respect for your service, your sacrifice, and the courage it takes to ask for help. At The Runway you are treated by people who understand combat stress and moral injury, alongside comrades who have carried similar weight. You served with honor. You deserve to heal with honor.

Recognized advocacy

Veteran Advocate of the Year, 2025

Our founder was named Care Possible's Veteran Advocate of the Year for his work supporting veterans and their families through recovery. This recognition reflects the heart of our program: no veteran should have to navigate addiction alone, and every service member deserves dignified care that honors what they carried.

Start here

Different benefits, one destination

Think of these benefits as different flight paths to the same runway. Each has its own rules, but all of them can lead to safe, dignified care. Here is how they compare.

TRICARE Prime

A managed-care option, much like an HMO. You have an assigned primary care manager and referrals help direct your care, usually at the lowest out-of-pocket cost. Often used by active duty families and those who want care coordinated for them.

TRICARE Select

A self-managed, fee-for-service plan. You have more freedom to choose providers and fewer referrals for many services, typically with somewhat higher cost shares. A good fit when you want to steer your own course.

TRICARE Reserve Select

Premium-based coverage for many members of the Selected Reserve and their families. It works much like TRICARE Select once enrolled, and can include behavioral health benefits relevant to treatment.

TRICARE For Life

Secondary coverage for retirees and eligible family members who have Medicare Part A and Part B, usually age 65 and older. Medicare pays first and TRICARE For Life picks up much of the rest for covered treatment.

VA Health Care

For enrolled veterans. The VA covers substance use treatment, and through Community Care it can sometimes authorize care outside a VA facility when distance or access is a barrier. Eligibility depends on your enrollment and service history.

CHAMPVA

A separate benefit for spouses and children of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition, or who died from one. If you are an eligible dependent, this may help cover care.

Not sure what you have?

That is the most common starting point of all. You do not need to decode the whole system alone. Share a few details and we will help you find which path is open to you.

TRICARE regions

West, East, and For Life, explained simply

TRICARE divides the country into two regions, each run by a different contractor, plus a separate program for retirees on Medicare. The benefits are the same nationwide. What changes is who handles your authorizations and claims.

TRICARE West

Covers the western states, including California where The Runway is located. Managed by TriWest. Your region is set by where you live, not where you get care, so West-region members can be approved for treatment here.

TRICARE East

Covers the eastern states and is managed by Humana Military. East-region beneficiaries can still receive specialty care like detox and residential treatment in California. We coordinate with Humana Military to confirm authorization before you travel.

TRICARE For Life

For retirees and eligible family members with Medicare Part A and Part B. Medicare pays first and TRICARE For Life pays second. Behavioral health treatment can be covered, but the two-payer setup makes verifying ahead of time especially important.

Active duty vs veteran

How your status changes the path

Whether you are currently serving or have separated from service changes who authorizes your care, how referrals work, and what to expect around confidentiality. Here is the difference in plain language.

Active-duty service members

Covered by TRICARE, usually TRICARE Prime, while serving. Substance use care is often coordinated through the military treatment facility and may involve command awareness, especially for residential care. Out-of-pocket cost is typically minimal.

Veterans (separated from service)

Generally covered through VA health care if enrolled, or through TRICARE if you are a retiree. The VA can authorize community care like ours when access or distance is a barrier. Confidentiality follows civilian rules in most community settings.

Retirees

May use TRICARE Prime or Select, or TRICARE For Life alongside Medicare once eligible. Retiree benefits often carry copays or cost shares, which we explain clearly before you commit.

Reservists & dependents

Reservists may use TRICARE Reserve Select when not on active orders. Eligible spouses and children may be covered through TRICARE or CHAMPVA. We help you confirm which applies to your family.

Military-friendly care

Care built around your service and your story

From the language we use to the way we handle authorizations, our team is trained to treat veterans and service members with the respect, discretion, and understanding you have earned.

A military-friendly environment

We understand the culture, the chain-of-command concerns, the weight of deployment, and the difficulty of asking for help. Our staff speaks plainly, moves with respect, and never treats your service as a liability. Whether you are active duty, a veteran, or a family member, you are among people who get it.

Award-winning veteran advocacy

Our founder was named Care Possible's Veteran Advocate of the Year in 2025. We are proud to partner with CarePossible, a nonprofit dedicated to making mental health and addiction care possible for veterans, military families, and low-income families. Together we help remove barriers so more people can reach the care they deserve.

How coverage usually works for treatment

Most veteran and military benefits include some form of behavioral health coverage, which is the part that can apply to medical detox and residential addiction treatment. The specifics, what is covered, at what level of care, and what your share of the cost may be, depend on your particular plan and eligibility. That is why verifying benefits matters more than guessing.

Why the differences matter

Prime, Select, VA care, and CHAMPVA each have their own rules for referrals, networks, and authorizations. Choosing the wrong assumption can cost time you do not have when someone is ready to get help. We help you read the instruments so the path is clear before you commit to anything.

You do not have to fly this alone

For many veterans, asking for help is the hardest mission of all. Our admissions team approaches every conversation with respect and discretion. There is no pressure, no judgment, and no obligation. We will simply help you understand what your benefits may make possible.

Please note: this guide is general information, not a benefits determination. Plan names, rules, and eligibility change over time, and final coverage decisions rest with TRICARE, the VA, or CHAMPVA. Verifying your benefits is the most accurate way to understand your options.

FAQ

Veteran insurance questions

What is the difference between TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select?

TRICARE Prime works like an HMO: you have an assigned primary care manager and referrals guide your care, often at the lowest out-of-pocket cost. TRICARE Select is a self-managed, fee-for-service option with more freedom to choose providers and no referral needed for many services, usually with slightly higher cost shares. Both may include behavioral health benefits that can apply to detox and residential treatment.

What is the difference between TRICARE West and TRICARE East?

TRICARE splits the United States into two regions, each run by a different contractor. TRICARE West covers the western states (including California, where The Runway is located) and is managed by TriWest. TRICARE East covers the eastern states and is managed by Humana Military. Your region is based on where you live, not where you receive care, so a West-region beneficiary can still be approved for treatment at an in-network facility. The benefit rules are the same nationwide, only the contractor handling authorizations and claims differs.

I have TRICARE East but want treatment in California. Can I still come?

In most cases, yes. Your region determines which contractor manages your plan, but TRICARE beneficiaries can receive care outside their home region, especially for specialty services like detox and residential addiction treatment. We coordinate with the correct contractor (TriWest for West, Humana Military for East) to confirm authorization. Verifying benefits before travel is the best way to avoid surprises.

What is TRICARE For Life and does it cover rehab?

TRICARE For Life (TFL) is for beneficiaries who are entitled to Medicare Part A and enrolled in Medicare Part B, typically retirees and their eligible family members age 65 and older. TFL acts as secondary coverage to Medicare: Medicare pays first, and TFL picks up much of the remaining cost for TRICARE-covered services. Substance use and behavioral health treatment can be covered, but the Medicare-first rules make verification especially important.

What is TRICARE Reserve Select?

TRICARE Reserve Select is premium-based coverage for many members of the Selected Reserve and their families who are not on active-duty orders. Once enrolled, it works much like TRICARE Select, with the same kind of behavioral health benefits that can apply to detox and residential care.

What is the difference between active-duty and veteran benefits?

Active-duty service members are covered by TRICARE (usually TRICARE Prime) while serving, and their treatment often requires command awareness and authorization through their unit or military treatment facility. Veterans who have separated from service are generally covered through VA health care if enrolled, or through TRICARE if they are retirees. The biggest practical differences are who authorizes the care, how referrals work, and confidentiality expectations. We can walk you through what applies to your exact status.

Do active-duty service members need command approval for treatment?

Active-duty care for substance use is usually coordinated through the military treatment facility and may involve command notification, particularly for inpatient or residential levels of care. This protects your benefits and your standing, but it does work differently from civilian treatment. Our admissions team has experience helping service members understand the process discreetly. Call us and we will explain what to expect for your situation.

Is treatment confidential for active-duty service members?

Confidentiality for active-duty members follows military health rules, which differ from civilian privacy. Certain treatment may be shared with command for safety and readiness, but many service members are surprised by how much support and discretion is available. We will be honest with you about what is and is not confidential before you commit to anything.

Can a retiree use both Medicare and TRICARE for treatment?

Yes. Retirees with TRICARE For Life use Medicare as their primary payer and TFL as secondary. For TRICARE-covered behavioral health services, Medicare pays first and TFL often covers most of the remaining cost. Because two payers are involved, verifying coverage ahead of time prevents confusion about cost shares.

Can veterans use VA health care for addiction treatment?

Yes. The VA covers substance use disorder treatment for enrolled veterans. In some cases the VA can authorize care in the community through the Community Care program when access, wait times, or distance is a barrier. Our admissions team can help you understand how this may apply and connect the dots with your benefits.

What is VA Community Care and how do I qualify?

VA Community Care lets eligible veterans receive treatment from approved non-VA providers when the VA cannot provide timely or nearby care. Eligibility generally depends on factors like drive time to a VA facility, appointment wait times, and clinical need. The VA must authorize Community Care in advance. We can help you understand the steps and coordinate with your VA team.

What is CHAMPVA and who is it for?

CHAMPVA is a health benefit for the spouses and children of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition, or who died from one. It is separate from TRICARE. If you are an eligible dependent, CHAMPVA may help cover treatment, and we can help you verify.

Do you accept TRICARE at The Runway?

The Runway is in network with TRICARE. Coverage depends on your specific plan, eligibility, and the level of care. Verifying your benefits is the fastest, most confidential way to understand what may apply to you.

Does TRICARE cover medical detox and residential treatment?

TRICARE includes behavioral health benefits that can apply to medically supervised detox and residential (inpatient) substance use treatment when it is medically necessary. The exact level of care covered and any cost shares depend on your plan. We confirm medical necessity and authorization as part of verifying your benefits.

Will I have out-of-pocket costs with TRICARE?

It depends on your plan. Active-duty service members usually have little to no out-of-pocket cost. TRICARE Select and TRICARE For Life beneficiaries may have copays, cost shares, or deductibles. We give you a clear picture of any expected costs before you commit, so there are no surprises.

Do I need a referral or prior authorization?

TRICARE Prime usually requires a referral and prior authorization for residential treatment. TRICARE Select often allows more direct access but may still require authorization for inpatient levels of care. We handle the authorization process with the appropriate contractor as part of admissions.

How long does it take to verify veteran or military benefits?

In many cases we can verify benefits the same day. Having a few details ready, your name, date of birth, benefit type, and member or sponsor ID, helps us move quickly. If care is time-sensitive, tell us and we will prioritize.

Can a family member call to start the process for a veteran or service member?

Yes. Families often make the first call. We will explain what we can do, what information helps, and what the next step looks like, confidentially and without pressure, even before your loved one is ready to talk.

What if my treatment is not at a VA facility?

That is common. Many veterans receive care at community providers through VA Community Care or through TRICARE if they are retirees. The Runway is a private, homelike residential setting, and we coordinate with the VA or TRICARE so the right approvals are in place.

What if I am not sure which benefit I have?

That is completely normal. Many families do not know exactly what their coverage includes until they ask. Share a few details and our team will help you read the map, no pressure and no obligation.

In remembrance

For those we have lost

Missing-man formationIn remembrance

In the missing-man formation, one aircraft pulls away from the flight and climbs skyward, a salute to those who did not return. We fly the rest of the way in their honor.

We hold space for the service members and veterans who did not make it home from this fight, and for the battles that followed them long after the uniform came off. They were not weak. They were not failures. They were sons and daughters, parents, spouses, and friends who carried wounds the world could not always see.

To the families who loved them and still grieve them: your loss matters, your hardship is real, and your loved one mattered. We carry their memory forward in the work we do, and we are honored to stand beside every veteran and family still on the journey home.

Gone, never forgotten. Rest easy.
